Before & After Stories

Project 1 - Rafters Revival

tinted varnish on rafters

It is a 200 year old house. When the contractor removed the old lathe ceiling, old solid Virginia cedar rafters were found. They were dark with dirt and age – their beautiful reds and burnt umbers hidden under grime. Some rotted lengths had to be replaced with modern cuts of cedar and we were asked to come in and match the colour of the old and new wood.

We cleaned the old cedar of grime and oxidation, but just the sheer age of the original cedar meant that it was naturally a deeper, redder colour than the modern cuts used in the rafter repair. We custom tinted the first batch of varnish to use on the modern lengths of cedar in order to deepen, darken and add complexity to the colour of the new wood to match the look of the old-growth cedar. Once the colour between old and new was united, we applied 3 coats of clear finish to all the rafters.

The wonderful old woodwork lives again and offer all visitors a view into their community’s past.

PROJECT 2 - Turning department store lights into vintage copper attention grabbers

copper paint outside lights

I noticed that a customer was in the process of giving up on their 7 outside lamps because the paint had died and was flaking off. I asked them if they would mind if I resuscitated one of them and they could make their decision then. I chose a copper finish to go with the deep grays of the house.

When the client saw the lamp’s new look, they immediately gave me the go-ahead for the other 6 lamps on the house.

Paint. It really is one of the quickest and most dramatic things to have done in and around your home. And that’s one of the reasons we love what we do.

Project 3 - See what it`s like when our painters turn ramshackle into a Homes & Gardens feature home

before and after renovation

We rejuvenated every surface in this seaside cottage project. The owners wanted to keep the existing trim, cornice mouldings, baseboards and all walls and ceilings – but they all needed profound repair. We plastered and primed the walls and ceilings, exposed the original shape and profile of the mouldings and doors, created a custom stain colour for the floor finishers, and applied new paint finishes to everything. The change in the little place is stunning.

Our transformation of the seaside cottage was featured in Homes & Gardens magazine.
